The Test Explained

What is IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is the world's most recognised English proficiency exam, accepted by over 11,000 organisations in 140+ countries — including universities, employers, immigration authorities, and professional bodies.

Scores are reported on a band scale from 1 to 9. Most candidates aim between Band 5.5 and Band 7.5, depending on their goal. The test covers four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Choosing the right module matters. Academic IELTS is required for university study and professional registration. General Training IELTS is used for visa applications, migration, and work purposes.

What We Cover

All 4 IELTS Skills

Each skill has its own format, timing, and examiner expectations. We work through every component with targeted strategies.

Listening

30–40 minutes of audio across four sections — from everyday conversations to academic lectures. Speed, accuracy, and attention to detail are key.

  • Note-taking and form completion techniques
  • Multiple choice and matching strategies
  • Map, diagram, and plan labelling
  • Predicting answers before the audio plays
  • Handling accents and fast speech

Reading

Three long passages with 40 questions in 60 minutes. Careful time management and targeted reading techniques separate strong from average scores.

  • Skimming and scanning for key information
  • True / False / Not Given and Yes / No / NG
  • Matching headings, sentence endings, and features
  • Time-boxing each passage to avoid overruns
  • Avoiding trap answers and paraphrasing traps

Writing

Task 1 and Task 2 in 60 minutes. The writing section is where most candidates lose marks — and where coaching makes the biggest difference.

  • Task 1 Academic: graphs, charts, diagrams, maps
  • Task 1 General: formal and semi-formal letters
  • Task 2 essays: argument, discussion, problem–solution
  • Band 7+ paragraph structure and coherence
  • High-scoring vocabulary and grammar range

Speaking

A 11–14 minute face-to-face interview in three parts. Examiners assess fluency, coherence, vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation.

  • Part 1: confident, natural answers on familiar topics
  • Part 2: 2-minute long turn with a cue card
  • Part 3: extended discussion and abstract arguments
  • Avoiding repetition; developing ideas fully
  • Pronunciation, word stress, and intonation drills

Student Results

What Students Say

Real results from real students who prepared for IELTS with Jack.

★★★★★
Achieved Band 7.0
I had already failed IELTS twice before finding Jack. In just two months of weekly sessions, he completely transformed my Writing score — from a 5.5 to a 7.0. His feedback was detailed, honest, and always focused on exactly what the examiner is looking for. I finally got the score I needed for my nursing registration.

★★★★★
Achieved Band 6.5
Jack's Speaking lessons were a game changer. I used to freeze in Part 3 — I simply didn't know how to develop abstract arguments. After practising with Jack every week, I went into the exam feeling genuinely confident. I got a 7.0 in Speaking and 6.5 overall, which was exactly what I needed for my Canadian PR application.
